    Feedback on website

    Hi,

Thought I’d sign-up and see what the site is about and also just spent a little money on the iPhone app. My fingers remain crossed on the app front as it’s still trying – and failing to locate me and I can’t explore the app until it does – feedback point 1!

    A minor glitch I hope…

On the website (and I suspect app). Please add new grading systems. I live in Sussex and climb the local sandstone which is English tech grading.

Also, I’m slightly confused about the target audience for teh site and app. ‘Bouldr’ doesn’t say ‘climbing’ obviously so will it attract only boulderers? I hope not as I really like the overall concept – I just hope you can get enough interest. I will start adding my local routes asap.

I’ll keep in tough. In the meant time. Why not follow me @thebadgerrogers on Twitter, I follow many other local climbers and am lucky enough to meet up and climb with Neil Gresham so I’ll mention it to him…

    RE: Feedback on website

    Hi Nathan!

Thanks for the feedback – I’m working on v2 of the Bouldr app at the moment, and I’ll be rolling your feedback into the list of feature requests I already have.

The sync is one area of improvement I’ve identified. I’m looking at providing a way of syncing a large portion of Bouldr’s data over wifi in order to reduce the load time of the app in the field. This will also allow me to build a better map browser with the app, too.

Thanks again, and let me know if you find any bugs or have more feedback.

    Matt

    RE: Feedback on website

i would like to point out i also bought the iphone app before i start talking.

the website has a lot of potential, but at the moment it is very very poor. the website, looks and feels better than the likes of rockfax and ukclimbing…however it has NO content. there are hundreds of climbs i have done all across the UK that have no been listed??

also the iphone app, at the moment is a complete con. it never locates you, and i couldnt find any climbs on the phone…hence coming online to find out the reason is YOU HAVE NO CLIMBS listed.

sorry if this sounds bad, like i said this could be great…but at the moment it is far from it.

    RE: Feedback on website

    Hi Ollie,

I’m sorry you’re having problems with the app. Are you on an iPhone or iTouch, and does it just never locate you?

I’m working on the next version, which includes changes to make the app work entirely offline, which should help with issues relating to the app not being able to contact Bouldr when syncing.

Thanks for the positive comments on the site – there is a new version of that in the works, too. We’re working on ways to improve our coverage; though it’s a tricky problem to solve. Which areas were you looking at?

    Cheers,

    Matt

    RE: Feedback on iPhone App

I too have just bought the iPhone app and frankly it is in no way worth the price you are asking for the quality (at time of writing this is £4.99).

The major problem is that I can get located, but there are no climbs near me to look at. I’m guessing there must be a cut off distance after which it stops showing them – I would seriously look at extending this distance if that is the case.

If you cannot get past being located then you have no access to the information which must be on offer. I’ve also tried browsing round the Google map on the app to try and find problems, but even if I zoom right into a location (where I can see on the website that there are loads of problems) none of them appear on the iPhone.

From the screen shots it looks like it will be great but right now it is totally restrictive and unusable unless you probably are located within say 10 miles of a problem (I don’t know I just made that up). I hope the new release you are working on fixes these issues and gets you to the information quickly. I’m afraid that right now as it stands I don’t rate this highly at all.

On the other hand, the website looks great and it’s got some great info on it.

    RE: Feedback on website

I have the same probleme with the iphone application. It’s the first time i buy one and for 6€ i’m quite disturbed it doesn’t work. Can’t locate me. Can’t have any access to the world map, there is no image.
    Waiting for the V2

    RE: Feedback on website

Again, apologies for the problems some of you are having with the app. I’m working on the next version (which includes an update to this site, too), which is rather substantial, and should alleviate the problems you are having. I’ll be posting on the blog, on Twitter and on Facebook when the next version is ready, but it’s probably going to be a couple of weeks before the update is out.

My thinking with the first version was that I’d build something that fulfilled my own needs (a guidebook for when I am at the crag that I can update while I’m out there), and I thought others might like it too. The version I released was the minimum that would work in my own use case. The feedback you lovely people have been leaving has allowed me to find out what does and doesn’t work, and is allowing me to reshape the app into something far better. This process of reshaping and gaining feedback isn’t something I’ve thought will happen for two or three versions – rather I’m thinking of it as something that will be ongoing for the lifetime of Bouldr, so please do keep up the bug reports and feature requests.

The £4.99 price will stay, though I’m looking at a free version that will be ad-supported. I can’t put a date on when that version will be released. The (relatively) high price is due to the app being niche (climbers with iPhones is not a massive market), and the development effort required – be assured I’ve been making a loss though!

The next version will not have a map – coverage limitations have made it impractical, so I’m going to pull it out and build the system in a way so that it doesn’t require an Internet connection at all.

Again, I understand you’re not happy if, after shelling out a fiver, the app you bought doesn’t work for you, but please hang on, and I’ll build you something that does.

    RE: Feedback on website

Hey Matt, I love the idea of this site! I also bought the Iphone app and can’t wait to get the new update. I live in WV and climb a lot at the New River Gorge and boulder at Hawk’s Nest and Cotton Hill. I have a guide book for these areas and I plan on putting lots of routes on here to help everyone and myself out. You’re site is nice dude I can’t wait for it to get more stuff on it. Thanks dude

    RE: Feedback on website

    Cheers, Sparky!

The new version is coming along well. Going to be updating the website either over the weekend or on Monday / Tuesday. Should have a new beta version ready around the same time, so I’m hoping to get V2 of the app out some time next week.

    Hang on in there!
