I recently did my first ever lead after doing one top rope. It was Barney Rubble 7A+ at Torbryan quarry. I am 14 and have been climbing for about 1.5 years and mainly focused on Bouldering but rarely went and just focused on training in the form of workouts like core stregnth and upper body stregnth. I brought a bouldering mat last at the end of last year and February this year I have been Bouldering quite alot. But the money I got for Christmas I brought some Sport climbing gear, so last weekend I thought I’d give it a shot. I first Top-roped Mayday 6b and then was encouraged to try a lead, so I then decided to try Barney Rubble 7A+ placing clips, and I did it onsight.
I am keen to find out what sort of grades other people are climbing at and what sort of training people do.
Good job dude. Like any sport, there’s a wide range of skill levels out there, but you shouldn’t get too wrapped around how ‘hard’ a route is, as long as you’re having fun. Plus you have to take into account who has rated the climbs to begin with. For example, many of the routes in Joshua Tree are notoriously sandbagged, or rated easier than they seem. For training…just climb! You can find a lot of training routines for climbing online, too. Good luck.
